The best routes to get to Panajachel by car from Guatemala City

Writer's picture: David RodasDavid Rodas

Panajachel, one of the most charming destinations in the Guatemalan highlands, is a place worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Surrounded by majestic volcanoes and the calm waters of Lake Atitlán, Panajachel connects you with nature and local culture. Arriving in Panajachel by car is a unique experience, and here I share with you the best routes to travel from La Aurora Airport to Atitlán Rest & Café in Panajachel.

Route 1: Inter-American Highway (CA-1) via Chimaltenango

This is the most popular and direct route to get to Panajachel from La Aurora Airport. You will leave the capital city in the direction of Chimaltenango, following the Inter-American Highway (CA-1). Then, you will pass through Tecpán, where you can take advantage of breakfast or lunch. Afterwards, you will continue towards Sololá, then cross the RN-11 and go down towards Panajachel. All the routes that go down to Panajachel have many curves, but the road was recently restored and is in good condition, which makes it a comfortable and safe option, and it also has views of Lake Atitlán.

  • Approximate distance: 113 km.

  • Duration: 2 hours and 52 minutes, depending on traffic.

  • Things to consider: This road can have heavy traffic, especially on weekends. It is recommended to leave early to avoid traffic jams.

Route 2: Inter-American Highway (CA-1) via Patzicía and Patzún

This route takes the Inter-American Highway (CA-1) and crosses at Patzicía, then continues through Patzún to exit at Godínez and go down to Panajachel via San Andrés Semetabaj. It is the most winding route and you should take into account that, depending on the road you take, you could cross a river without a bridge. However, the road was recently restored and is in good condition.

  • Approximate distance: 114 km.

  • Duration: 3 hours and 3 minutes.

  • Things to consider: This route has many curves and passes through several rural communities. You will not pass through Tecpán, so you should consider eating when you reach Panajachel, as there are practically no restaurants along the route, except in Patzicía. It is recommended to be aware of possible river crossings without a bridge.

Route 3: CA-9 and CA-2 Highway via Escuintla (known as 'traveling through hot lands')

This route is the least conventional of the three, as it passes through Escuintla. Although it is longer in distance, it can sometimes be faster if there is a lot of traffic on the Interamericana. In addition, it offers a different experience, passing through lower terrain before ascending again towards Panajachel, known as an alternative to the altiplano and tierra fría.

  • Approximate distance: 169 km.

  • Duration: 4 hours and 8 minutes.

  • Things to consider: Includes tolls and a longer route. Ideal if you prefer a road with fewer mountainous curves and don't mind traveling a longer distance.

Additional tips for your trip

Avoid rush hour: Leave the capital city during non-rush hour (4:00 to 7:30 pm and 5:00 to 8:00 am). The rest of the hours there is more or less traffic, but rush hour can greatly multiply your trip. It would be better to wait somewhere before leaving during rush hour.

Check your vehicle: Before setting off on your trip, make sure your car is in good condition, as some parts of the route may be steep and winding.

Enjoy the stops: On each route you will find interesting places to stop, whether to try typical food, admire the landscape or simply rest.

Panajachel is a destination that awaits you with open arms, and the journey there can be a big part of the adventure. Whether you take the most direct route or decide to explore more of the Guatemalan highlands along the way, each option has something special to offer.
