Traveling from Guatemala City to Panajachel can be an exciting experience, but it's important to know the transportation options available to make your trip as smooth and safe as possible. Here's a handy guide to help you get around with confidence and make the most of your visit to beautiful Lake Atitlán.

  1. Public transport options

    a. Public Buses (Camionetas) Public buses, known as "camionetas," are an inexpensive and authentic option for traveling. These colorful, traditional buses can be a bit uncomfortable for long trips, but they offer a unique cultural experience. Plus, they are the most affordable option when it comes to public transportation.

The vans, which were once school buses, have a vibrant and lively atmosphere, with vendors getting on at every stop, and typical Guatemalan music playing in the background. If you want a truly authentic experience, the vans are the way to go.

If you want to use public transport, we explain how it works in this other blog: How public transport works in Guatemala .

    b. Tourist shuttles Tourist shuttles are a more convenient and direct option. These services are operated by travel agencies that generally pick up passengers in tourist areas, hotels in Guatemala City, La Aurora Airport or Antigua Guatemala, and take them directly to Panajachel. It is advisable to book in advance, especially during high season. Here are some links to contact some options:

    c. First Class Buses Companies such as Trans Galgos and ADN offer first class buses with more comfortable amenities such as air conditioning and reclining seats. These buses have regular departures from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango. Usually, you will need to transfer at either "Los Encuentros" or "La Cuchilla." We recommend "Los Encuentros" as there are more "vans" available to get to downtown Sololá, making the transfer more convenient.

  2. How to get there from Guatemala City (by van and by regular or first class bus): Step by step

    a. Bus terminal: Go to "El Trébol" on Calzada Roosevelt, there if you arrive before 3:00 pm you can wait for a "Transportes Rebuli" van, you can identify it because on the side of the bus they have written the name of the line they belong to, if you arrive after that time you will have to make a transfer (change from one bus to another) at "Los encuentros".

    b. Transfer in Sololá Once in Los Encuentros, you will have to look for another van that goes to Panajachel. You will know this because the assistants will shout it out ( Here you can read in detail how the vans work ).

The route you must take by public transport is the one shown below on the map.

  1. Practical tips for a smooth trip

    a. Schedules Public buses (vans) usually stop operating at 6:00 pm, shuttles being a semi-private service operate with a more flexible schedule but it will depend on the agency you contact so you should talk to them, finally the premium lines operate on fixed schedules also depends on them and to use them you must go to their station, they do not make stops at the van stops.

    b. Fares "Vanes" are the cheapest option, with fares ranging from Q30 to Q50. Tourist shuttles can cost between Q80 and Q120, while first-class buses have fares ranging from Q60 to Q90.

    c. Security Keep your belongings close and make sure you do not carry valuables in plain sight. Travel light and always carry a copy of your important documents.

    d. Convenience Bring water and something to eat for the trip. Some buses do not have frequent stops, so it is best to be prepared.

    e. Emergency contact Have the contact numbers for your accommodation in Panajachel and any taxi service on hand in case you need them upon arrival.

    • The PNC (National Civil Police) number is 110

    • The firefighters' number is 122

  2. Alternatives

    a. Boat Trip If you are coming from another town around the lake, consider taking a boat to get to Panajachel. It is a scenic and quick option, especially if you are staying in places like San Pedro La Laguna or Santiago Atitlán.
